Brought Together By Dyngus, Couple Married During a Pussy Willow Filled Ceremony

BUFFALO, NEW YORK -  Along with the celebration of spring and Polish pride, Dyngus Day has been considered by many a day for Polish match making. A special day where the flirtatious trading of water and pussy willows has ended in romance and even marriage.

Once such couple who experienced the magic of “Dyngus Day romance” got married during the 2007 Dyngus festivities. Rob Zielinski and Linda Monet met on Dyngus Day 1996 at the St. Stanislaus Parish Social Center in Buffalo’s Historic Polonia District. Eleven years later, Rob & Linda got married on Dyngus Day in a ceremony to included red and white flowers along with pussy willow filled bouquets.

“Dyngus Day is an incredibly friendly celebration,” explained Monet. “After meeting Rob near the social center’s bar, we danced, talked, laughed and well....eleven years later, we're getting married. Dyngus Day will forever hold a special place in our hearts and relationship.”

The wedding took place on Monday, April 9th, at 2:30pm at Salvatore’s Garden Place Hotel located at 6461 Transit Road, Depew. After the ceremony, the couple were the guest of honor in their “just married” car during the first ever Dyngus Day Parade. The parade took place at 5pm in Buffalo's Historic Polonia District.

The tradition holds true that on Easter Monday boys/men would sprinkle the girls/women with water and tap them with pussy willows as a sign of affection. This act seems to open up conversation and allows anything to happen.

Does God Believe in Dyngus Love?

My husband and I met on Dyngus Day 1992 when Chopin's still existed on Kosciuszko Street.  Actually, my dad and uncle were the first people my husband met upon approaching the bar near the polka band.  Apparently they were making some beer driven exclamations about Rich's height (he's very tall).  Anyway, my dad encouraged Rich to find his single daughter dancing in the room with the sound system. Purely by chance, he found me!  Well, we thought it was by chance until I came home and told my mom about this great guy I met.  My mom smiled as she explained that she asked my grandmother for a little help.  My gram had passed away 2 weeks earlier from cancer.  Attending Dyngus Day was a deliberate decision to move on from our months of mourning and celebrate life.  As I was leaving for Chopin's, my mom asked my gram, "Now that you're even closer to God's ear, will you please ask Him to help Jill find a good man?" We were married in July 1994.  Oh yeah, my mom and dad also met at Chopin's on Dyngus
Day almost 30 years earlier.
