Brought Together By Dyngus, Couple Married During a Pussy Willow Filled Ceremony
BUFFALO, NEW YORK - Along with the celebration of spring and Polish pride, Dyngus Day has been considered by many a day for Polish match making. A special day where the flirtatious trading of water and pussy willows has ended in romance and even marriage.
Once such couple who experienced the magic of “Dyngus Day romance” got married during the 2007 Dyngus festivities. Rob Zielinski and Linda Monet met on Dyngus Day 1996 at the St. Stanislaus Parish Social Center in Buffalo’s Historic Polonia District. Eleven years later, Rob & Linda got married on Dyngus Day in a ceremony to included red and white flowers along with pussy willow filled bouquets.
“Dyngus Day is an incredibly friendly celebration,” explained Monet. “After meeting Rob near the social center’s bar, we danced, talked, laughed and well....eleven years later, we're getting married. Dyngus Day will forever hold a special place in our hearts and relationship.”
The wedding took place on Monday, April 9th, at 2:30pm at Salvatore’s Garden Place Hotel located at 6461 Transit Road, Depew. After the ceremony, the couple were the guest of honor in their “just married” car during the first ever Dyngus Day Parade. The parade took place at 5pm in Buffalo's Historic Polonia District.
The tradition holds true that on Easter Monday boys/men would sprinkle the girls/women with water and tap them with pussy willows as a sign of affection. This act seems to open up conversation and allows anything to happen.
